Hi mam, kudos for your great work in helping out all the moms.
Can i add roasted bengal gram powder to porridge of my 6.5month old baby?
    Is it nothing but pottukadalai?
    Should it be sieved?

      Hi Madhavi,

Thank you for the appreciation dear. Yes you can add pottukadalai, It’s better if you can sieve the end product, so that it would become easy for the mix to get cooked just by adding piping hot water.

    Hi,

Can you please confirm the difference between the homemade brown rice cereal and the instant rice porridge powder is that in the former we roast the rice after sun drying it and in latter we roast the rice powder after grinding it?

And also this is the reason that the homemade brown rice cereal needs to be cooked on the stove and for instant rice porridge powder we just need to add boiling water?

    Thank you for your help.

Your blog is very helpful, I just started solids for my 6 month old baby and your blog is helping me a lot. Thank you 🙂

      Hi Zainab,

Thank you for your feedback dear. The rice variety used in both the mixes are different. White rice gets cooked easily and that is used in instant mix. Brown rice takes time to get cooked so it has to be cooked well before feeding (brown rice cereal). Rice is washed, dried, dry roasted and then powdered.

Great information Ma. You didn’t roast the raw rice after drying. I thought it should be roasted. Thanks

      Hi Robina,

Thank you dear. It can also be roasted if required. Fine rice powder will get cooked by just adding piping hot water itself, so roasting is not done.

Hi hema.. why have you used Bengal gram in almost all porridge? Does it as to the flavour or helps in consistency? Can it be replaced?

      Hi Soumya,

It gives good flavor as well as taste and it’s easily cookable too. It can be skipped instead of replacing.

      Hi Rama,

The water should be piping hot, which means that the water should be boiling. And the hot boiling water needs to be added with rice porridge powder and stirred for a minutes and then close the lids for the porridge to cook through.

    Dear Dr. Hema,
When we prepared, we couldn’t grind to powdery texture, it’s slightly raw kind, is it the correct form of mix? I’m doubtful if it didn’t get cooked with Hot Water?
    Please clarify

Hi Akhila, yes you can grind to a powdery texture if you find it okay for your baby. It is better to stick to a fine powder so that it gets easily cooked with hot water.

Hello Selvi, for rice porridge you have to soak the rice and dal in water and dry it in under the sun. Then you can roast both the ingredients and grind them. Yes adding hot water is enough. For ragi porridge powder sprouting is not necessary, roast and grind them, adding hot water is enough for this as well.

Can these instant porridge recipes be given twice or thrice a week regularly for my 11 month old?
Also let me know if soaking and drying out in the sun is a mandatory step?
Can I directly soak and then pan roast them instead?
