When it comes to natural remedies, there is a special homemade oil called “Velichenna” that holds great value. Originating from Kerala, this DIY Ayurvedic oil is often referred to as “liquid gold” for its effectiveness in helping babies and toddlers with cold and cough. As winter arrived, I eagerly took on the task of making this precious oil at home, knowing it could bring much-needed relief to my little one. This traditional remedy has stood the test of time, proving that sometimes the simplest solutions can be the most powerful.
This oil contains many herbs, each of which has its own medicinal properties. Here is a look at the benefits of each ingredient of velichenna.
Indian Borage or Panikoorka for cough
Panikoorka, an ayurvedic herb known for its medicinal properties, is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating common cold, cough, and fever. The leaves of this herb serve as a natural antipyretic and have proven to be highly beneficial, particularly for babies and toddlers. The use of Panikoorka for cough and respiratory ailments has gained popularity due to its remarkable efficacy in providing relief. This natural remedy offers a gentle and effective solution for combating cough symptoms in young children.
Tulsi (Holy Basil)
Tulsi is a popular herb known to encourage lustrous, shiny and healthy hair.
Camphor
Camphor gives the oil a pleasant smell and keeps the scalp healthy. It also helps to absorb excess moisture in head and is useful for treating dandruff and an itchy scalp.

Peppercorns help clear the mucus from a congested nose and provides relief during a cold.
Coconut oil
This is base for this herbal oil. It is natural hair conditioner. Use only virgin coconut oil as you are using it for babies and toddlers.
Rice grains
Rice grains are an important component of this oil, as the properties of starch are useful in the treatment of cold sores.
