Kids love play dough, my son in contrary loves to eat play dough!!! So made this edible play dough !
The moment we open the box he will pinch a small portion and pop it in his mouth. So I had stopped buying play dough for a long time. When I saw this Edible Play Dough Recipe, I jumped on it and immediately made a batch, of course with help of my little one, a messy affair!!! But worth the fun.It was very soft to work with and super tasty too !!!!
Now on to the recipe
How to make Edible Play Dough
Ingredients
1. Plain all purpose flour
2. Cooking oil ( I used sunflower oil)
3. Food colors – The food colors can either be liquid or powder. I used a powder, to which I added water to make a solution.
4. Salt
5. Water
Method
1. Take the flour in a large bowl.
2. To the flour add the required amount of salt.
3. Pour water into the flour and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in it.
4. Knead the dough evenly, if required more oil can be added.
5. If it is sticky, add more flour.
6. When a soft consistency is attained, make the dough into small sections with craters.
7. In the craters pour the food colors.
8. Use a glove ( I have used a surgical glove, as we have a bunch always at home, kitchen gloves also work fine) to mix the individual dough. Please lubricate the gloves with oil, as the dough may stick with the glove. Please use a separate glove for each color or wash after mixing each color.
9. An alternative method, the dough can be placed in a zip lock polythene bag, close the zip and knead the dough into the color required.
10. Viola!!! Your Edible Play Dough is ready!!!
Believe me, it is not that easy as this sounds, it takes multiple attempts to master the art of blending the dough to the perfect consistency.
Do mail me(at [email protected]) your photos of home made play dough which will be posted to the FB page of My Little Moppet.
Natural food colors like beetroot, carrot juice can also be used instead of synthetic colors. Will post the recipe with natural food colors soon.

Required amount of salt means ?? How much should we add. ???
Hi,
The amount of salt depends on you dear. According to your baby’s taste. It’s always better to add little salt.
Can u mention the measurement for Maida and salt.this would help us to add accordingly.
Dear Maida can be large bowl, with a pinch of salt in it.
Looks great! Can we use whole wheat flour instead of maida?
What should be the minimum age of the child to introduce playing dough?
Hi Durga, you can use whole wheat flour, we have not suggested that since it is play dough.
I made last week with same method but it stinks next day..and become hard.
Oh oops, is it. It turned out well, when I tried for toddlers.
Looks very simple to try. It would have been better if the quantities were mentioned of each item.
Pragati, to start with take a small bowl instead of large and check how it turns out. Thanks
Should we store it the refrigerator? I’m worried if it starts smelling or turns bad.
Anu, you can store it in an air tight container for upto a month.
Hi Hema, Very creative idea… will defly try and post it.. But question arises for me is shelf life of it.. how many days it can be stored ..
