Ragi Urad Dal Porridge

Ragi Urad dal porridge is a healthy and delicious breakfast recipe for babies and growing kids. Made with homemade ragi urad dal cereal and water, this porridge can be introduced in a baby's diet after 8 months of age. This calcium and protein rich porridge is very easy to make. Ragi / fingermillet and urad dal / skinned black gram are dry roasted and then cooled and powdered. This flour/cereal can be prepared and kept in an air tight container and used as required. For babies below 1 year do not add milk or sweetener, however cardamom powder can be used to flavor the porridge. Fruit puree may be added if desired while serving. For elder kids, this porridge can be made with milk and sweetener like jaggery and served as health drink.

Ingredients

  • Ingredients for the homemade ragi urad dal flour / cereal:
  • 1/2 cup ragi / fingermillet
  • 1/2 cup urad dal / skinned black gram
  • Ingredients for Ragi urad dal porridge:
  • 1 tablespoon homemade ragi urad dal flour/ cereal
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch of green cardamom powder

Instructions

  • Dry roast the urad dal and whole ragi separately on low to medium flame.
  • Allow it to cool down in a plate.
  • Transfer the roasted ragi and urad dal in a grinder jar and grind to a fine powder. Store this cereal in an air tight container.
  • Method to prepare porridge using homemade ragi urad dal cereal.
  • In a sauce pan take 1 cup water.
  • Add 1 tablespoon ragi urad dal flour to it and whisk well .
  • Now transfer this sauce pan to stove top and cook the porridge on low to medium flame for about 10 minutes.
  • Keep stirring the porridge while cooking to ensure it does not stick to the bottom of the pan.
  • Put off the flame. Add a pinch of cardamom powder and give a quick stir.
  • Allow the porridge to cool down a bit and serve.
