Heat ghee in a pan. Keep 1 cup of water to heat in another pan.
Add cumin seeds to the ghee. Once the seeds crackle, add the grated onion, if using. Saute for about a minute.
Next add in grated carrot and stir fry for few seconds.
Add turmeric powder, followed by suji.
Stir fry the suji with veggies on low to medium flame for 1-2 minutes.
Now add the boiling water slowly while stirring continuously to ensure no lumps are formed in the upma. Keep stirring the upma until it attains a desired consistency.
Put off the flame. The upma further thickens on cooling, so adjust the cooking time and amount of water accordingly.
Serve the upma to your baby while it is still warm.
